In a significant development for Sri Lanka’s travel and tourism industry, Nalaka Amaratunga, CEO of Walkers Tours, has been elected as the Honorary Treasurer of the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) at their Annual General Meeting (AGM) held recently at Heritance Ahungalla.
This appointment is a testament to Amaratunga’s extensive experience, leadership, and commitment to the industry, which is pivotal as SLAITO continues to play a vital role in driving the nation’s tourism recovery and growth.
With over 180 Destination Management Companies (DMCs) as members, SLAITO continues to serve as the apex body representing the key players in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. Notably, 90% of these members belong to the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector, and collectively, they are responsible for generating more than 65% of tourist arrivals in the formal tourism sector
Amaratunga commenting on his role said “Tourism is one of the pillars of our economy, and I am honored to serve as Honorary Secretary at a time when collaboration is essential to propel Sri Lanka forward as a preferred global destination”
Amaratunga has a well-established reputation for his strategic vision and deep understanding of the inbound tourism sector. Under his leadership, Walkers Tours has become one of Sri Lanka’s premier Destination Management Companies (DMCs), consistently promoting the island as a top tourist destination, even in challenging times. His new role as SLAITO’s Honorary Secretary will amplify his influence in shaping policies and fostering collaboration across the sector, further supporting SLAITO’s mission of sustainable tourism growth and industry unity.
Amaratunga’s election comes at a time when the tourism industry is rebounding with positive growth trends. His role as Honorary Secretary is expected to strengthen the ties between SLAITO, government bodies, and private stakeholders, advocating for policies that address both the challenges and opportunities ahead.
