John Keells Becomes the First Sri Lankan Company to Participate in the World Economic Forum's 1t.org

John Keells Group has become the first Sri Lankan company to pledge its support to the World Economic Forum’s 1t.org initiative, a global effort to conserve, restore, and grow one trillion trees by 2030. This commitment highlights John Keells’ dedication to environmental sustainability and global ecosystem restoration.

1t.org, a platform launched to accelerate nature-based solutions, supports the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. By pledging to plant 130,000 native trees by 2030, John Keells is contributing to this crucial initiative, addressing climate change and biodiversity loss while promoting sustainable development.

Key Restoration Initiatives:
1. Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project

  • Located at the Sinharaja Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this project focuses on restoring 59 acres of degraded land.
  • To date, 21,000 trees have been planted in collaboration with Ruk Rakaganno and the Forest Department of Sri Lanka.
  • 2. Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts: Habarana Complex

  • This project spans 40 acres at the Cinnamon Habarana complex in the North-Central Province, a former brownfield site now undergoing restoration.
  • 4,006 trees have been planted, with ongoing efforts to monitor biodiversity and support conservation.
  • 3. Tea Smallholder Factories

  • Restoration efforts extend to tea-growing regions, including Kurupanawa, New Panawenna, and Broadlands tea factories.
  • 850 Mahogany trees were planted at New Panawenna, while 350 Halmilla trees and 100 Mee trees were planted at Kurupanawa and Broadlands, respectively.
  • These initiatives play a vital role in preventing soil erosion, enhancing biodiversity, and mitigating greenhouse gases, fostering healthier and more sustainable ecosystems.

By partnering with 1t.org, John Keells sets an example for businesses across Sri Lanka and the world. Their efforts reflect a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, driving positive change for future generations. This pledge strengthens Sri Lanka’s position in global sustainability efforts, proving that corporate responsibility can pave the way toward a greener planet.
