Sri Lanka – India Ferry Link Set to Sail Again After 40 Years

A tale of historical splendour, centuries-old maritime ties between Sri Lanka and India are restored with the planned resumption of a passenger ferry service between the two countries.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation confirmed that the service, which will be operating from Kankasanthura in Sri Lanka to Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, India, will commence on February 15th 2024.

Following the four-decade hiatus in passenger ferry operations between the two nations, this announcement marks a significant milestone.

The service was previously suspended due to various internal circumstances in Sri Lanka.
However, with renewed efforts and approval from the Government of India, the passenger ferry’s return opens new avenues for bilateral connectivity and the possibility of travelling to India at lower costs.
