Sri Lanka Launches Rs. 1.5 Billion Digital Campaign to Reclaim Global Tourism Spotlight

Sri Lanka Launches Rs. 1.5 Billion Digital Campaign to Reclaim Global Tourism Spotlight

The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) has officially launched a Rs. 1.5 billion interim digital and public relations campaign, marking the island’s first major structured international promotional effort in more than a decade

Running from August 2026 through April 2027, the campaign targets six high-yielding source markets and is timed to capture the crucial winter booking season. It also serves as a precursor to a broader Rs. 5 billion global branding campaign scheduled to roll out in March 2027.

Buoyed by the anticipated impact of the campaign and improved airline connectivity, the SLTPB has revised its 2026 tourism targets upward, now projecting over 2.7 million arrivals and US$ 4.2 billion in earnings — a significant lift from the earlier downgraded forecast of 2.5 million arrivals and US$ 3.5 billion, which had been tempered by the Middle East crisis and aviation disruptions.

SLTDA Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam expressed confidence that the subsequent global campaign will push arrivals past the three million mark next year, generating over US$ 5 billion, and set the country on course toward a US$ 10 billion revenue target by 2030. “The waiting is over. Sri Lanka’s next tourism chapter and nation branding journey are officially underway,” he said.

The campaign adopts tailored strategies across its six primary markets. Australia leads the rollout with a six-month push featuring digital activations across Meta, TikTok and YouTube, supported by roadshows in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Adelaide, extending to Auckland and Christchurch in New Zealand.

Campaigns in the United Kingdom and Germany will follow in September for eight months, strategically aligned with the World Travel Market in London and ITB Berlin. China joins in September for a seven-month campaign focused on secondary cities, while India commences in October with heavy digital activations targeting tech-savvy travellers and through OTA platforms. A focused winter seasonal campaign in Russia will run through March 2027.

Tourism Deputy Minister Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe said the promotional drive aims to attract high-spending visitors and pivot toward specialised segments including wellness, diving and golf. The global campaign, he noted, will run through February 2029 and be supported by an AI-powered travel discovery platform designed to strengthen Sri Lanka’s visibility across global search engines.

He also stressed the importance of authenticity in the destination’s marketing narrative, urging that Sri Lanka promote what is genuinely available while developing new product portfolios in less-explored regions such as the Northern and Eastern provinces.

Industry stakeholders welcomed the long-awaited campaign while calling for disciplined execution. Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators President Nalin Jayasundera urged joint promotional mechanisms with international tour operators and airlines, and recommended expanding the campaign to at least ten source markets without waiting for the global rollout, noting that stakeholder synergy is essential to reaching the five million arrival target by 2030.

The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka President Ashoka Hettigoda pointed out that the hotel sector has invested over US$ 15 billion over the decades and needs sustained returns through high-spending, long-staying visitors. He proposed monthly review briefings to track the campaign’s progress and maximise return on every rupee spent. “Excellence is not a static award; it is a daily commitment to improve. Now that the campaign has been launched, we cannot afford complacency,” he said.
