Growing a Greener Future: Walkers Tours Volunteers in Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project

Growing a Greener Future: Walkers Tours Volunteers in Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project

As part of our ongoing commitment to protecting Sri Lanka’s natural heritage, the Walkers Tours team once again came together for our annual volunteering initiative at the Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project in Sinharaja.

This year’s volunteering opportunity was arranged and fully sponsored by the John Keells Foundation (JKF), reflecting the shared commitment of Walkers Tours and JKF to supporting meaningful environmental and community initiatives. We are truly grateful to JKF for creating this opportunity and enabling our employees to come together, spend time in nature and make a meaningful contribution to an important conservation initiative.

24 members of our team travelled to the restoration site on the 14th of August 2026 to spend the day getting hands-on with one of Sri Lanka’s most important conservation landscapes. Working together with the project team, our volunteers planted around 50 native trees, contributing to the continued restoration of rainforest habitat in the Sinharaja buffer zone landscape.

For us, volunteering is more than simply giving back. As a destination management company, we believe that the places we introduce to our travellers should also be places we actively help protect. Sinharaja is a vital part of Sri Lanka’s natural heritage, supporting rich biodiversity and providing important ecosystem services to surrounding communities.

The Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project is a long-term initiative focused on restoring degraded forest areas, strengthening ecosystems and creating livelihood opportunities for the surrounding community. During our visit, our team also supported local livelihoods by enjoying food prepared by community members, while gaining a deeper understanding of the people and natural environments that make Sri Lanka so special.

Every tree planted is a small step towards a healthier forest and every volunteer helps make that step possible.

We are proud to continue this journey year after year and grateful to everyone who joined us in putting sustainability into action. We look forward to returning to Sinharaja and continuing to grow our contribution to Sri Lanka’s rainforests.
