A Milestone Beyond Tourism: Respite Facility Opens Near Sinharaja Rainforest

On 18th December 2025, Walkers Tours proudly marked a meaningful milestone with the opening of the Respite Facility near the Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project in Waddagala, Kalawana: a project made possible through the generous funding and partnership of Sawadee Reizen.

Set against the backdrop of the Sinharaja landscape, this facility was designed to serve a simple yet vital purpose: to provide clean, dignified, and safe rest and sanitation facilities for volunteers and visitors who dedicate their time to rainforest restoration and conservation efforts. While modest in structure, the facility represents a powerful commitment to responsible tourism, community well-being, and biodiversity protection.

What makes this initiative truly special is the way it was brought to life. The project was developed with strong local community involvement, from securing landowner consent to engaging local contractors, workers, and all local sourced suppliers. Construction was carried out with sensitivity to the surrounding environment, ensuring minimal impact on this ecologically significant area while maximizing long-term benefits for both people and nature.

The opening of the Respite Facility strengthens the volunteer experience at the Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project, encouraging deeper engagement in conservation while also creating opportunities for the surrounding community. Local residents can now connect with visiting volunteers, share their culture, food, and benefit from increased responsible tourism activity in the area.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Sawadee Reizen Netherlands for supporting a project that places sustainability, dignity, and community empowerment at its core.

As we move forward, the Respite Facility will continue to serve as a symbol of what can be achieved when tourism goes beyond travel, creating lasting value for communities and protecting the natural heritage that makes Sri Lanka extraordinary.
