Sigiriya is the 8th Wonder of the World which is nominated by UNESCO one of the best Sri Lanka cultural tours to try out. It is a fortress which is built on a rock mountain. As per the ancient Sri Lankan chronical King Kashyapa (AD 477 – 495) had identified the natural protection that it has and developed the still rock to a palace with a wonderful architecture. It is believed to be made in the complete structure of a lion and as of this day we can see the foot of the lion at the entrance of the rock fortress. The name Sigiriya had broken down from the word “Sinha Giriya” in Sinhalese, which is defined as the Lion Rock. This is just the highlight of the history of Sigiriya.

Moving on to the adventure part of the climb, if you are in Sri Lanka by any chance definitely Sigiriya should be a part of your itinerary. Sigiriya is one of the hotspots in the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka. We had Sigiriya on our plans to visit early in the morning but with scenic surrounding where we did spend the night it was never an easy call to get off the hotel early in the morning. Somehow, we did manage to reach Sigiriya late in the noon. The sun wasn’t that harsh on us when we did reach Sigiriya, it made the climb much comfortable.

There is a controversy between Sigiriya being a Royal Palace and a Monastery. Right from the ticket counter there are several evidence to prove on both the opinions. The outlook of the entrance to the foot of Sigiriya Surrounding the Lion Rock is the beautiful royal gardens, including water gardens, boulder gardens, and terraced gardens.

It is a steep climb to the top of the rock from the Lions’ paws. On the climb to the top the breeze that goas across the rock rushes the adrenaline and definitely a sip of water will boost your climb. The view from the top of the rock is simply mesmerizing and for a moment I felt as if I was in the game of Temple Run with similar looking rock paving and walls around you.

After you enjoy the view and the pond on top of the rock you should definitely take your way down to gaze at the pretty ladies from the 5th century AD. The drawings of Sigiriya are preserved to date and it is testimonial for the astatic values of the nation that spans back in time.

On your way down the lions’ rock, you could find the boutiques which sells monuments of Sigiriya and if you are a lover of souvenirs, you can have a exquisite one at a fairly reasonable price. And not to miss the visit to the Sigiriya Museum, assured it will not let you with any regrets.
