The world-renowned Michelin brand, synonymous with culinary excellence, has expanded its legacy into the realm of hospitality with the launch of the Michelin Key Awards — a global recognition for exceptional hotels. In its very first edition, ten Sri Lankan properties have earned this coveted distinction, placing the island firmly among the world’s most inspiring travel destinations.
The Michelin Key represents a new international benchmark for hotels, much like the Michelin Star does for restaurants. The award celebrates establishments that deliver remarkable guest experiences based on five key pillars: architectural and interior design, service quality, personality and uniqueness, value for money, and commitment to the local environment and community.
Hotels can be awarded one, two, or three Keys, signifying “a very special stay,” “an exceptional stay,” and “an extraordinary stay,” respectively. Unlike the restaurant guide, the Michelin Key programme spans the globe, spotlighting outstanding stays in every corner of the world.
Sri Lanka’s Remarkable Recognition
In this debut year, Sri Lanka’s hospitality industry has made an impressive mark with ten hotels recognised by Michelin:
Three Keys
Two Keys
One Key
This recognition reinforces Sri Lanka’s growing reputation as a destination that blends natural beauty, thoughtful design, and authentic experiences. The inclusion of these properties among the world’s finest reflects the country’s evolving hospitality landscape — one that continues to captivate discerning travellers in search of meaning, quality, and connection.
The Michelin Key Awards not only spotlight Sri Lanka’s distinctive hospitality but also signal a strong message to global travellers: the island is ready to welcome the world with warmth, creativity, and world-class standards.
