Empowering the Next Generation of Naturalists Through Strategic Partnerships

Empowering the Next Generation of Naturalists Through Strategic Partnerships

The future of sustainable tourism depends on knowledgeable professionals who can interpret, protect, and advocate for Sri Lanka’s extraordinary natural heritage. To help create opportunities for aspiring naturalists, Walkers Tours sponsored the Naturalist Training Programme 2026, organized by Horizon Campus’ Environmental Society, Nature Beyond the Horizon (NatBeHo).

Held over five days (1–5 June) at the venue provided by Habarana Village by Cinnamon, the programme brought together 21 undergraduate science students for an immersive field-based learning experience. Through expert-led classroom sessions, safari excursions, night trails, biodiversity monitoring, species identification, ecological research techniques, and interactions with experienced naturalists, participants developed the practical skills and confidence required to pursue careers in nature-based tourism and conservation.

Walkers Tours played a significant role in making the programme accessible by sponsoring facilitator honorariums, participant accommodation, and transportation for both students and resource people while Nature Trails by Cinnamon provided expertise knowledgeable naturalist and Mr. Vimukthi Weeratunga as one the key resource person.

Beyond developing technical expertise, the programme created meaningful pathways to employment. Students engaged directly with tourism and conservation professionals, gaining valuable industry exposure while opening opportunities for internships and future careers as naturalists, researchers, sustainability practitioners, wildlife guides, and ecotourism professionals.

Our collaboration with Cinnamon Nature Trails, Cinnamon Lodge, Habarana Village by Cinnamon, and Horizon Campus demonstrates the power of partnerships in developing the skilled professionals who will shape the future of responsible tourism. At Walkers Tours, we believe that investing in young talent today is an investment in conserving Sri Lanka’s biodiversity and strengthening the long-term sustainability of our tourism industry.
