The Wilpattu National Park, located on Sri Lanka's west coast, extends inland towards the ancient city of Anuradhapura in the Cultural Triangle. The park is mostly dry zone jungle with a few flood plain lakes banked with delicate white sands. It has an impressive variety of flora in vast expanses of forest, as well as diverse wildlife.
The prevalence of villus, or natural lakes - similar to basins - is a topographical characteristic unique to this part of the island. The Wilpattu National Park's villus, with the exception of two, all contain pure rainwater and are home to a diverse diversity of resident and migratory waterbirds.

Ramayana Bridge
The Indian Sanskrit epic Ramayana by Valmiki mentions a bridge called Setubandhanam, which connects India to Sri Lanka, the land of Ravana, the ruler of men and god. The epic attributes the bridge's construction to Rama's ape army, which was assisting him in his war against Ravana in order to reclaim his wife, Sita.
True to the tradition, a bridge existed between Sri Lanka and India not long ago, linking Rameswaram Island off the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and Mannar Island off the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. According to geological data, this bridge was once a land link between India and Sri Lanka, consisting of a sequence of limestone shoals bordered by a shallow sea of one to ten meters in depth.

Anuradhapura – a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the north central part of the Island was the first capital (5th century BC - 9th century AD), the centre of the island's Buddhist civilization and undoubtedly the grandest city of ancient Sri Lanka. In antiquity and the interest, it is the equal of any ancient 'buried city' in the world. Specific places to visit are - the Brazen Palace (2nd century B.C.), with 1600 significant stone columns are the remains of a magnificent multi-storied residence for monks – an engineering marvel at the time, Ruwanweli Seya (2nd century B.C) the most famous of all the dagoba’s, originally depicted the perfect water-bubble shape that modern restoration has not been able to accurately reproduce, Samadhi Buddha (3rd century B.C.) regarded as the finest rock sculpture in the island - depicting the Buddha in a state of deep meditation, Isurumuniya rock temple (3rd century B.C.) known for its rock carving of the “Lovers”, Kuttam Pokuna, twin ponds (3rd century B.C.) which were used by monks of this glorious era as a bathing pool. Thuparama (3rd century B.C.), the oldest dagoba in the island – enshrines the right collarbone of Buddha, Ratnaprasada with the best preserved Guard Stone, Mahasena’s Palace with its renowned Moonstone, Abayagiri and Jetevanarama – a huge dagoba said to the largest brick built structure in the world.

Exploring Sigiriya
Sigiriya - A mighty 600 ft high rock-fortress of a 5th century King is famous for its entrancingly beautiful frescoes which are found in a sheltered pocket of the rock. One cannot fail to marvel at the masterful execution of the sinuous forms of these women (originally 500, of which only 19 remain today). The old stairway to the top led through the mouth of a huge crouching lion, carved from the rock- today only the paws remain. Remains of the handsome royal citadel are on the summit.

Danigala Circular Rock.
According to legend, Ravana used this unusually shaped mountain as an airport. However, in recent years, local villagers have also reported seeing UFOs.
This land is shrouded in mystery, as the vegetation found on the mountain appears suspicious to both travelers and historians. Take a hike into the unknown and share your experience with family and friends.
