The Bellanwilla Rajamaha Temple Situated within the city of Colombo, has a long and hallowed history. The great sanctity attached to the temple is due to its sacred Bodhi-tree, which is believed to be one of the 32 saplings that sprang from the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi-tree in Anuradhapura, dating back to 3rd Century BC. The temple is also known for the beautiful murals that adorn the walls of the shrine hall (Budu-Ge).
These murals which were painted by artist Somabandu Vidyapathy, at the age of 67, depicting in different strokes the life of the Buddha and Buddhism. His creativity can be seen in an area of 4,632 square feet of walls at the temple. Trace the history of Buddhism and art in this historic site.
