Renowned for its infamous “elephant gathering”, safaris during the dry season offer incredible encounters with hundreds of Sri Lanka’s wild elephants, found gathering by the central reservoir. July through October marks the migratory season, as herds pass through a network of reserves in the North Central region. Minneriya National Park sees some of the largest groups spotted, and sightings can reach up to 350 elephants at a time.
The jeep tours are conducted at a safe distance with no direct contact with the elephants, prioritising the well-being of the now-endangered species.
In addition to the gentle giants, the park is home to 160 species of birds, 24 species of mammals and a variety of endemic flora.
