Walkers Tours is proud to announce our participation as volunteers for the TACHUP Project, a key conservation initiative led by the Wildlife & Nature Protection Society (WNPS) along with Lanka Nature Conservationist (LNC), Wayamba University, Horizon Campus and Young Zoologists Association (YZA) to protect Sri Lanka’s endangered sea turtles along critical nesting beaches in Colombo.
On 1st November 2025, Walkers Tours was proud to sponsor and host the TACHUP (Turtle and Coastal Health United Program) Training for Trainers, session at the JKH Auditorium.
This training program equip 65 lead volunteers with the knowledge and skills needed to train their own teams ahead of the upcoming nesting season. Participants represented a wide spectrum of institutions, including the WNPS Youth Wing, Horizon Campus, Wayamba University, ICBT, Colombo University, and corporate partners such as Walkers Tours and CICT. Representatives from key government agencies: DWC, CCD, MEPA, Police, Municipal Council, Navy, and Coast Guard, also joined and expressed their continued support.
The training covered essential protocols on the do’s and don’ts of handling turtle eggs, along with a special lecture by Dr. Sajith on the impact of microplastics on turtles and human health. A hands-on practical session at the Dehiwala beach demonstrated turtle nest relocation techniques and coastal vegetation restoration. This year, the project aims to restore 10 coastal vegetation plots along the Colombo coastline to help secure healthier habitats for nesting turtles in the years ahead.
Patrol activities are expected to begin in December, and Walkers Tours is proud to contribute to preparing the volunteer network that will safeguard Sri Lanka’s precious marine turtles this season. Through this initiative, we continue to uphold our commitment to protecting biodiversity and supporting conservation-driven, responsible tourism.
