Wilpattu National Park, situated northwest of Anuradhapura, is the largest national park in Sri Lanka, covering an impressive 131,693 hectares. It is best known for its distinctive “Villus” – natural rainwater lakes fringed by open grasslands that create perfect habitats for a wide range of wildlife. Originally declared a sanctuary in 1905 and upgraded to national park status in 1938, Wilpattu is famous for its leopards, along with sloth bears, Asian elephants, spotted deer, crocodiles, and over 31 species of mammals. The park is also rich in birdlife, especially between November and March when migratory birds arrive. Visitors can explore its wilderness on jeep safaris, and its pristine forests, serene lakes, and abundant fauna make it a top choice for nature lovers and wildlife photographers.
