In a Mysterious Retreat
Legends & Mysticism, Ritigala Forest Monastery

Situated on the highest point of the North Central plains, the ruins of the Ritigala monastery showcase an ancient mysticism surrounded by dense forest, uniquely distinct from the low-lying dry zone’s flora. With roots dating back to the first century, the monastic complex was once home to Buddhist monks who spent their lives devoted to meditation in the forest. The preserved stone ruins and 300-metre reservoir are notable highlights of this area.

In addition to its fascinating archaeology, Ritigala is also believed to have ties to the Ramayana epic. According to legend, the mountain was once a part of the Himalayan peaks, dropped by Lord Hanuman during his mission to rescue Sita.

Today, the site is a popular stop along the cultural triangle for pilgrims and tourists alike.
