A Floral Escape in the Hills
Hakgala Botanical Gardens

The second-largest and highest botanical garden in Sri Lanka, the Hakgala Botanical Garden was founded in 1861 and is tucked away beneath the towering Hakgala Rock in the central highlands. It covers 28 hectares and has a moderate, temperate environment that is perfect for its wide variety of more than 10,000 plant species.

Explore the vibrant rose garden with international varieties, the glasshouse showcasing cacti and succulents, and the serene fernery. The garden also features a bulb garden, an arboretum, and charming water features. Rich in history and mythology, it’s believed to be the mythical “Ashok Vatika” from the Ramayana epic. Hakgala offers a tranquil escape, showcasing both indigenous and introduced subtropical and temperate plants, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts.
