Tucked between Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, Minneriya National Park isn’t particularly large. The reserve only stretches across 88 km² — a significant contrast to the thousand-odd square kilometres of Yala National Park. Yet, despite its size, Minneriya National Park is home to some of Sri Lanka’s most incredible wildlife encounters.
Centred around a 3rd-century rainwater reservoir, the park encompasses a range of habitats, including montane forests, dry shrub, wetlands, and rocky outcrops. Its landscapes invite a variety of wildlife, including the island’s largest gatherings of elephants during the dry season. In addition to the elephants, spotted deer, birds, and leopards also frequent the park, along a network of reserves situated in the Cultural Triangle.
Although the great elephant gathering happens from July to October, the park is an excellent year-round destination.
