The trek to World’s End, located within Horton Plains National Park in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, offers a captivating adventure. This dramatic escarpment boasts a sheer cliff face with a vertical drop of approximately 880 to 1,200 meters (around 2,900 to 4,000 feet).
The 9.5 km circular trail traverses diverse landscapes, from misty cloud forests to open grasslands, leading to both “Mini World’s End” and the main World’s End viewpoint. On clear mornings, typically before 9:00 AM, the panoramic views are breathtaking, extending across tea plantations, valleys, and even to the distant Indian Ocean, some 81 km away. The return path often includes a visit to the picturesque Baker’s Falls.
• Go Early. Aim to start your hike as close to 6:00 AM as possible to maximize your chances of clear, panoramic views before mist and clouds roll in (typically after 9:00 AM).
• Dress in Layers. The weather can change rapidly from cold and misty in the morning to warm and sunny. Bring layers, including a light waterproof jacket.
• Absolutely avoid walking off the designated paths. It’s dangerous near the cliff edges.
• Avoid getting too close to the edge for photos or to look down, especially in windy or misty conditions.
