Across Wild Plains
Udawalawe National Park

Situated just south of Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, the Udawalawe National Park is a vast area of grasslands and thorny shrub jungle. It is the sixth-largest national park on the island. Not only is it home to many wildlife species, but it also surrounds the Udawalawe Reservoir, an important source of hydro power for the region.

Those looking to catch sight of elephant herds won’t be disappointed with a visit to this national park, where around 500 elephants roam in herds of around 100. Other species that keep the elephants company include the Water Buffalo, Sambar Deer, and the endemic Toque Macaque. The park is also home to vibrant bird and butterfly species, making it a rather enchanting place to visit.
