Established in the 4th century, the city of Anuradhapura marked the birth of Sri Lanka’s very first kingdom. Its heritage is undeniably sacred, centred around a cutting from Buddha’s ‘Tree of Enlightenment’. Believed to have been brought over by a 3rd-century princess, this fragment of history cemented the city’s role as the island’s spiritual heart, extending its influence across the land for over a millennium.
Today, the ruins of Anuradhapura are scattered throughout 40 km of the central region. Formerly shrouded by dense jungle, its collection of dagobas, gardens, royal tanks, and a palace makes up some of the most significant historic sites in Sri Lanka. Visitors can explore the colossal structures and remarkable engravings on an in-depth tour through Anuradhapura and take in all its ancient glory.
