With a history dating back to the 1st century, the Dambulla cave complex is a remarkable testament to the island’s enduring heritage with Buddhism and spirituality.
Once inhabited by forest-dwelling monks, the temple today is one of a kind. Just a short distance from the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the caves preserve intricate murals and over a hundred multicoloured statues, chronicling the life and legacy of Buddha. Additional carvings and stupas line the 38-metre rock face, spanning the network of 5 main caves.
Open daily from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, the site also features an extensive museum at the base of the cliff, accompanied by a 350-step ascent to the caves. Tours immerse visitors in 22 centuries of history, intertwined with a rich spiritual and artistic legacy.
