The Government has announced the appointment of new Chairmen for the key positins at Sri Lanka Tourism. Buddhika Hewawasam has been named as the new Chairman of both the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), while Dheera Hettiarachchi will be at the helm of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) and the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB).
Hettiarachchi, previously the SLITHM Cluster Head for Travel and Tourism, brings a strong background in tourism management to his new role, particularly in hospitality education and MICE tourism. Hewawasam has been actively working in the industry including the national carrier, Sri Lankan Airlines and will lead the promotions and development of Sri Lanka Tourism.
These appointments follow the resignation of the previous Chairmen and come at a critical juncture for the tourism sector, which is seeking to capitalize on post-pandemic recovery and increase foreign exchange earnings. Both Hewawasam and Hettiarachchi are expected to introduce fresh perspectives and innovative strategies to enhance the global appeal of Sri Lanka as a premier travel dest
ination, while focusing on strengthening infrastructure and long-term sustainability.
With this renewed leadership, the Government aims to accelerate growth, attract more international visitors, and ensure Sri Lanka’s competitive positioning in the global tourism market.
