The center of Sri Lanka’s gem industry, Ratnapura produces sapphires, rubies, cat’s eye, alexandrite, topaz amethyst, aquamarine, tourmaline, garnet and several other glittering precious stones. Gem collections can be seen at the National Museums. Rubber and tea estates dot the scenic landscape.
