Elephant Polo Tournament |

| 24
– 28 January 2006 |
This year’s event, the
fifth Annual International Elephant Polo Tournament
to be held in the southern historic city of
Galle on the 24 through the 28 of January, has
attracted a record number of teams from around
the world.
Organized by the Ceylon Elephant Polo Association
(CEPA), features eight teams - from Australia,
India, Singapore, France, Thailand, Hong Kong,
Scotland and Nepal. |
|
|
Played against the backdrop of the 5th century
ramparts of the Galle Fort, the annual event
attracts both international tourists and the
local community, raising awareness of - and
funds for - elephant conservation.
And the fun doesn’t stop when the matches
are over. The social side of the tournament
provides an opportunity for players and spectators
to relax and let their hair down at a number
of stylish, informal parties.
While it may never rival cricket as the country's
top sport, elephant polo is fast becoming an
important event on Sri Lanka's annual sporting
calendar and would become a major event on the
tourism calendar.

February 2006 (Sunday) |
This remembers the appointment of the Buddha's
two chief disciples in the pre-Christian era.
The main celebration of this event is a colorful
peripheral held by the Gangaramaya a beautiful
lake-side temple in Colombo.
|
Navam
Perahera
The streets of Colombo transform under the weight
of 100 colourful elephants during February's full
moon. The Navam Perahera, which started in 1979,
attracts more than a million spectators every
year to the Gangaramaya Temple, at Hunupitiya
on the banks of the picturesque Beira Lake.
The event usually has as many as 1000 performers.
The fearsome kas karayas inaugurate the processions
by cracking their whips in the air, while schoolchildren
scurry behind, carrying colourful flags. Plenty
of noise is contributed by percussion bands, conch
shell blowers, stilt-walkers, flautists and drummers.
But the real guests of honour are the 100 elephants,
brought from different parts of the island and
decorated in true style. |

and traditions are meticulously observed. Activities
such as lighting of domestic hearths, cooking
and eating the first meal, business transactions
and commencing occupational work in the new year
are at astrologically auspicious times to ensure
good fortune. Everyone wears new clothes in the
prescribed lucky colour and freshly-harvested
grain is used to prepare milk-rice (kiri-bath
in Sinhala and parl choru in Tamil) in new post;
and for delicious traditional sweetmeats. Traditional
games such as elle, gudu and pora-pol and raban
(bass drum) playing and swing-riding add to the
merry-making and open-house hospitality prevails.
